Biermans wins the stage, Kragh Andersen takes the yellow jersey

The second stage of the Škoda Tour de Luxembourg 2023 ended in a bunch sprint. After 183.9km between Mondorf-les-Bains and Mamer, Jenthe Biermans (Arkéa-Samsic) won ahead of Søren Kragh Andersen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Tim van Dijke (Jumbo-Visma). Kragh Andersen takes the yellow jersey as overall leader.

As in the first stage, Lennert Teugels (Bingoal WB) and Mats Wenzel (Leopard TOGT Pro Cycling) were part of the breakaway and fought for the climbers jersey. They were accompanied by Pascal Eenkhoorn (Lotto Dstny) and Elias Maris (Team Flanders Baloise).

With 95km to go, the situation had changed: Wenzel stayed in the lead, while Bastien Tronchon (Ag2r Citroen Team) and Luca van Boven (Bingoal WB) joined him. His three previous companions had been caught by the peloton. But in the end, none of the breakaway groups stood a chance.

Jenthe Biermans (Arkéa-Samsic): “I’m obviously very happy. It’s my second win of the year and of my career in general. It was a difficult day with several attacks. I thought this was good for me because it made it harder for the real sprinters. Tomorrow will be too hard for me. I’m concentrating on the final stage, even though it might be a bit too difficult from my point of view.”

Søren Kragh Andersen (Alpecin-Deceuninck): “I’m obviously disappointed. I saw the finish line and hoped I could win. In the end, the stage was 50 metres too long. But it’s always special to wear the yellow jersey in a race. I’m delighted about that. However, my first objective was to win a stage, and I didn’t manage to do that. Now I want to defend the yellow jersey. Tomorrow will be tough, and I’ll have to be smart.”
