Marc Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates) won the 83rd edition of the Škoda Tour de Luxembourg. On the final stage between Mersch and Luxembourg-Limpertsberg (177.2 km), his 24th place was enough to defend his overall lead, 22 seconds behind the day’s winner Tobias Halland Johannessen (Uno-X Pro Cycling Team).
Hirschi’s teammate Brandon McNulty was second overall, 3 seconds behind. Third place went to Ben Healy (EF Education First), 5 seconds behind.
Shortly after the start, a twelve-man breakaway group was formed, including Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal Quick-Step) and Victor Campenaerts (Lotto Dstny). Lennert Teugels (Bingoal WB) was also in the group. He tried to take the mountains jersey from Mats Wenzel (Leopard TOGT Pro Cycling), but failed in the end. The breakaway group didn’t stand a chance, though, and so the decision was only made on the last climb of the Pabeierbierg, which was 2 km before the finish.
Marc Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates): “It was stressful, but it was also good for us that there was a big breakaway group at the beginning. That’s why the race was really fast all day. My legs felt very tired. In the end, it was good that a small group decided the victory among themselves, because this way I was sure that my competitors didn’t get any bonus seconds. The Škoda Tour de Luxembourg is a great race. I have already raced in Luxembourg as a youth rider. I have a great impression of the country and the terrain with the many small climbs suits me very well.”
