The 2nd stage of the SkodaTour LuXembourg between Junglinster and Schifflingen ended in a bunch sprint after 163.4 km. Matteo Trentin (UAE) won ahead of Florian Sénéchal (QST) and Davide Ballerini (QST). Valentin Madouas (GFC) defended his lead in the general classification.
Eight riders escaped the peloton after the start and formed the breakaway of the day. Bastien Tronchon (ACT), Cyril Barthe (BBK), Tom Wirtgen (BWB), Joel Nicolau Beltran (CJR), Asier Etxeberria Zafra (EUS), Morten Hulgaard (UXT), James Fouche (BEB) and Justin Wolf (LPC) took a maximum lead of 3:45 over the main bunch. But in the end they had no chance to survive, as the peloton caught the breakaway with 7 km to go.
On the Poteau de Kayl, the last climb shortly before the finish line, no rider was able to break away decisively, leading to the expected sprint in the end.
Matteo Trentin: “We rode very well today with the whole team and played out several cards in the final phase. It was a good performance by the team. I think tomorrow’s stage will be the hardest, but I feel quite good. Now we have won a stage, so there is no more pressure.”
