Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates XRG) has won the 85th Škoda Tour de Luxembourg. On the fifth stage between Mersch and Luxembourg-Limpertsberg, the American secured the overall victory. Despite numerous attacks on the tough final circuit over the steep Pabeierbierg climb, he and his team managed to keep their rivals in check. The stage win over the 176.4 km route went to Romain Grégoire (Groupama-FDJ).
Early in the stage, a breakaway of twelve riders formed, but it had no impact on the race outcome. In the decisive phase, Grégoire and Ben Healy (EF Education Easypost) pulled away from the competition. On the final climb, Healy was unable to match the Frenchman’s acceleration.
Overall winner Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates XRG): “It feels really good to win here. This was my last race of the season. It’s also the 86th victory for my team this year. It’s a nice way to finish the season. These have been great weeks for me, as I also won a race in Canada last Saturday. In fact, I only decided a few days before the ŠkodaTour de Luxembourg that I would ride here. The team told me that I should mainly come because of the time trial. So from the very start, the goal was to win the overall classification. It was a great race, very well organized, and I was really happy to be here.”
Stage winner Romain Grégoire (Groupama-FDJ): “It’s crazy to be standing here as a winner again, after my victory on the first stage. These were five incredible days in Luxembourg. The weather made it even tougher today. I’m just happy I was able to raise my arms at the finish. It wasn’t actually planned to attack that early, but when Ben Healy went, I reacted. With him, you know he always rides full gas after an attack, so you just have to follow.”
Mil Morang (National Team Luxembourg), winner of the mountain classification:
“It’s unbelievable to win the mountains classification. It was a really tough day for me. The goal was to try to take first place at the first KOM and then see what would happen. But I had no energy at all. So I asked my teammate Mathieu Kockelmann if he could take points away from my rivals. And he managed to do it.”
